Have you ever heard of
Oracle? Possibly, as it now has its name branded onto a sports arena. However,
before this time, it wouldn’t be a bad guess to assume that you have never
heard of Oracle before that point in time. And if you hadn’t heard of Oracle at
all, well, its likely one of the biggest companies you’ve never heard of. Why?
Because it’s a company that you don’t see advertising, it’s the company that
helps create the advertisements you see. It’s a data mining company.
Now you may be asking yourself “What’s a data mining
company?” Well, a data mining company is a company that takes your information,
for example what car you bought this year, what you looked up on Google
yesterday or what you watched on Netflix last month, and sells this information
to companies looking to create an advertisement specialized towards you. This type
of advertising is called “narrowcasting”, and it is the idea that certain ads
are created with a specific demographic group in mind and the ad will be
pointed to appeal towards that group rather than other groups. This type of advertising
can be very beneficial to a company.
But these advertising companies must get their
information from somewhere, which is where our data mining companies, in the
case Oracle, would come in. Companies like Oracle do most of the work. In this
case, Oracle predicts trends for data companies, predicts what will appeal to
consumers and when, stuff like that. Essentially, it predicts the present and
future based off of the information that you provide them every time you buy an
item, click on a link or watch a video. These data mining companies are the
secret gears running behind everything you watch.
But, often times these companies do more than just data
mine. In recent years, Oracle has expanded to also include more technological
advancements, another reason why they have entered the stage more than other
data mining companies. They also serve as large storage operators and offer
their dating mining services for individuals to use at their will, with Oracle
providing the data and nothing more. Companies such as these are becoming more
diverse with the products they sell, for better or for worse.
However, a part of these companies will always be with
what they are now: Data miners. The same is true for Oracle as it is for the
rest of the data mining companies. These companies are the unseen gears
functioning a digital world we’ll never fully understand. No one fully
understands it. These companies just try to make enough sense of it to get by.
